About Dattuh
Why Dattuh?
Dattuh is a bootstrapped startup business based in Rhode Island. We build software that helps small businesses turn their operational data into accurate, useful accounting records.
Small businesses, especially microbusinesses, need reliable financial data to make good decisions. But too often, the systems they use are expensive, rigid, or time-consuming to maintain. Dattuh exists to give small businesses accounting data that fits the way they actually operate without creating more overhead.
As for the name: the search for a short, available domain that included the word data proved fruitless. So the question became — how would a Rhode Islander pronounce it? Dattuh was available. Whether that is actually how Rhode Islanders say it is not entirely clear, but it makes us smile.
Dattuh began as a volunteer side project, where Dattuh founder William Cunningham used Excel VBA to bridge a real gap: pulling client data from sources such as e-commerce platforms, Stripe, and PayPal, then transforming it into QuickBooks-ready transactions. As a CPA who has mentored many small startups, William saw firsthand how valuable good data integration could be for the businesses he worked with.
What is Dattuh?
Dattuh is a data integration and processing platform built to help small businesses turn operational data into accurate, useful accounting records. It is designed to manage integrations, automate transformation workflows, and produce financial data that is practical for business owners and meaningful for accountants.
Dattuh is built with Ruby on Rails, a mature framework used by companies such as Shopify, GitHub, and 37signals. Just as important, Rails continues to invest in small teams and independent builders through its One-Person Framework vision. That makes it a strong fit for Dattuh: software that needs to improve quickly, stay maintainable, and deliver practical tools without unnecessary complexity.
Is Dattuh secure?
Security and privacy are core priorities at Dattuh. We follow industry best practices to protect customer data, including secure authentication, encryption, and monitoring. We keep stored data to a minimum, encrypt sensitive data in transit and at rest, and delete uploaded data files after processing is complete. Our goal is to handle customer data carefully, responsibly, and with strong respect for privacy.
Is Dattuh accurate?
Small business data is often messy. Different systems record information differently, and inconsistencies are common. Dattuh is designed to improve accuracy through validation checks, automated error detection, and reconciliation-focused workflows that reduce the chances of bad data making its way into your books.
We run over 1,000 tests before releasing software changes to production. Accuracy and reliability are not side concerns for us; they are central to the product. Rather than building a business around fixing preventable data problems after the fact, Dattuh is designed to help prevent those problems in the first place.
